Overview of the Residency Match
The residency match process is a structured system that pairs medical graduates with residency programs based on mutual ranking preferences. It is managed by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and utilizes a computer algorithm to determine optimal placements.
Key Components of the Match
- ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service): The platform through which applicants submit their credentials, including CVs, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and USMLE scores.
- Interviews: Programs review applications and invite candidates for interviews to assess their compatibility.
- Ranking and Matching: Both applicants and programs submit ranked preferences, which NRMP processes to generate final matches.
Residency Match Timeline
- June – September: Prepare and finalize ERAS application materials.
- September – October: Submit ERAS applications and begin receiving interview invitations.
- November – January: Attend residency interviews.
- February: Submit rank order list to NRMP.
- March: Match results are announced during Match Week.
Match Week and SOAP
If applicants do not match, they can participate in the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), which allows them to apply for unfilled positions.
